I was stunned when my neighbor let me drive his BMW X5 a few years ago. The 'keyless' remote had to be inserted into the dash?? And then a button had to be pushed to start the engine? My 08 MB has a keyless remote that I keep in my pocket, just push the start button.
My wife has a 2013 X1 beemer, remote stays in her purse. But, to turn off the car and wanting to leave, the stop button has to be pushed twice. The first push of the button will turn off the engine and put it into acc mode??? Why? How many people, how often, want to put the car into acc mode when they are finished driving?
Manufactures are sometimes very silly when it comes to everyday usage of these vehicles.
I agree with Henry Ford, the start/stop button should be left of the steering wheel and in the dash, not on the column. To heck with all the right handed people in the world (unless the driver's seat is on the right side of the car).
I remember my brother-in-law driving down Chicago's Lake shore drive with a bunch of kids in his Buick stationwagon (carburetor). One of the kids grabbed the key and turned the engine off. Leaving it in gear, B-I-L turned the key back to 'on' and immediately blew the muffler off the car!! Seems a bit of raw gasoline poured down the exhaust...
