"If you have the 5 speed autobox, those are prone to break early. The software Volvo provided did not match the engine torque, along with problems with gear release timing."
Our one-owner 2000 V70 SE (NA B5244S motor) with original five-speed AW-55 SN autobox now has 232K miles. (Hope I don't jinx it by posting this!).
About three years after the new purchase, we had a dealer software update to address the problems described above, and it was a successful repair. Every 65-70K miles the ATF is changed with Mobil 3309, for a total of three fluid changes thus far.
The car still shifts well with no flares, slipping or clunks. We drive hilly and curvy roads and the car is manually downshifted frequently from 5th to 4th and 3rd gears.
Probably a combination of regular maintenance and luck?!
