Recommendations New to XC and V70

Don't even think about the 2001-2002 with the automatic 5 speed. The XC is nice in the winter, but a set of snow tires on the FWD will also get you there with less maintenance. The AWD version before 2004(?) is mechanical and the transfer gear box is prone to overheat.

For reliability stick with the FWD, if you can find one. It drives like the 855, with better seat warmers and window controls.
