Idle hands V70-XC70

Yes, the starter assembly includes a solenoid. But, an electromechanical solenoids consist of an electromagnetically inductive coil, wound around a movable steel or iron slug (termed the armature). The coil is shaped such that the armature can be moved in and out of the center, altering the coil's inductance and thereby becoming an electromagnet. The armature is used to provide a mechanical force to some mechanism, like connecting the starter motor to the flywheel.

In the 2002 V70, the engine has VVT (variable valve timing) which is controlled by a solenoid at the top of the engine (under the timing belt cover). This particular solenoid is sensitive and can get dirty from lack of oil changes, using synthetic oil helps keep it clean. This part is not difficult to replace or clean. Or the electrical wiring to the solenoid may have been crimped under the cover and causing an error message. I assume the check engine light is on.

A dead battery, or nearly dead battery, will cause all kinds of problems. Computers need at least 9V to run correctly, so if the cold weather degrades the voltage enough, your car will not start.

Be careful jump starting, you could fry some electronics if done with too high voltage. BTW, the security module is in the passenger side fender, hidden by the fender liner - it has a battery which is prone to leak after many years and destroy the circuit board.

My guess is the 'son' who currently uses this car is not into spending money to keep the car running. Lack of proper maintenance will be piled on to the new owner...
