V70 "reduced engine performance' when using cruise V70-XC70

2003 V70 2.4t On certain occasions when using cruise control especially when climbing an incline the engine will abruptlly go to "reduced engine performance" mode. Its quite shocking at first when it happens and there better not be someone tailing you when it happens on the highway....

It seems to happen most frequently on two lane highways where there are more sharp hills, Seems to not happen on interstate highways where hills are gradual.

The car abruptly will loose all power and the transmission goes into a lower gear or something and the engine seems to run rough.. The only way back to normal performace is to immediatelly pull over and shut off the engine then re-start. Once re-started, all is fine again.

What is going on here? Is it a defective mass air flow sensor or something else? Seems to be fine when the cruise is off while accelerating up hills...Only happens with cruise "ON".

Need too get this fixed cause my wife refuses to use cruise...Quite frankly, I don't either..

Thx.
