Bob, Just a couple of things to keep in mind.
Volvo .....engineer's engine longevity pretty well.

I am not sure where you live, but if you experience cold weather....
the oil will be thicker (viscosity issue) and may collapse a 2 micron filter
or open the by-pass which defeats the filter and can release a slug of crud into the engine... Long story, but this was learned the hard way by the military.

Klaus, I agree, shortly after changing the diesel oil and filter on my boat engine it looks as pretty black .....
