A/C Clicking noise V70-XC70 1998

Electronic or Manual Climate Control. The ECC has an 'auto' blower speed control, the MCC has 0-5 speeds. ECC also has temperature gradings on the dials, where the MCC has red/blue lines for hot/cold.

Does the car in question have the vent and blower settings on "auto"? If not, do that before turning the engine on, and see if the AC and recirc buttons blink 20 times. The blinking lights indicate an error in the ECC system.
