Check Engine Light S80 2001

My check engine light has been on for a couple of months but I’m due for my emissions test so I had my mechanic turn it off. It came back on before I even left his lot so he reset it again. It stayed off for about a half an hour then came back on. He says it’s probably a sensor which would cost more than the car is worth. Does anyone have any “tricks” to get me through the test? Thanks!!!
