Good chance you'll never need to use the key to get into the car but you're also just one dead battery from being very very inconvenienced.

I seem to recall that my '01 had a lock cylinder behind a rubber plug in the tailgate, next to the handle (viewed from the underside). However I don't see it mentioned in the owners manual so maybe my memory is failing me. Worth a check for that as a secondary means of entry.
