Wouldn't it be easier to just rip off the inside door panel so you can get access to the rod that pulls on the latch?

Sure, you could cut off a bunch of sheet metal to gain access. Just not so deep that you get stuck in the latch assembly motor. Keep the sparks to a minimum!

Don't forget to disconnect the electrics before lifting the door off the hinges.
