One easy way to add a fuse to a wire is to put insulated female spade connectors on each end and connect them with a modern fuse.

In my 54 Chevy I use female spade connectors on all wire ends and join them with plastic insulated double male connectors.

Since access to bulbs is not easy on older cars, I add a connection under the hood or inside the trunk for troubleshooting.
