I had mine changed proactively concurrent with my last T-belt at 210,000 miles. I now wish I had not as the pump they removed felt as tight and good as a new one. They seem far better than those on the old 4-bangers that might last 100k with luck. I would think you could feel end-play on the pulley while the T-belt is removed and then base your decision on that. The water pump and labor concurrent to T-belt change added 200 bucks to the job. Well at least now I know I'm good for a couple hundred k miles before I have to worry about that again.
