Charcoal Cannister S70

Greetings Frank,
Question, is the canister basically a filtering device for gas fumes? If so, perhaps this device goes beyond EPA rules and any additionl enviromental req. by state. I understand that a malfunctioning canister will not damage the engine, however, the device must be replaced in order to clear the infoumas "CHECK ENGINE" light. Your expertise is most certainly appreciated,at least by me, if not all caregivers to our Volvo S70'S.
