Outer edge tire wear on front 850 1996

I notice the same symptoms on my 1996 850 GLT. My local mechanic told me it was normal! I thought that was a stupid answer, so I took it to my dealer. The dealer told me it was because of the tire pressure being too low. Not sure I buy that either, but not sure what else to do other than take it to get the alignment checked.
