Simple.. Hook up a calibrated boost gague and hit the car hard. On your low octane fuel the ECU won't let it run at full pressure as detonation/pinging sets in an it backs off the pressure (along with the ignition timing and dumping in more fuel). Top speed and acceleration times suffer as a result.
Now run a few tanks (4 or so should do) of 92+ octane and do it again.. Now you will see full pressure and get the the related performance. Pretty direct connection.
