2.9 vs. T6 S80

I am currently driving a 97 850 GLT with the light turbo. Considering an S80 and am wondering if I would be disappointed in the performance of the 2.9. Don't really want to pay the significant extra $$ for the T6. Anyone out there have comments about the performance of the 2.9, and especially if you've had the light turbo?
