Gear selector lights 850

The lights only work at night (makes sense if you never park in a dimly lit underground car park...) And, it is reasonably common for the bulb to fail - which is probably your situation.

The replacement snaps in - the bulb and its holder are integral. However, I have found that with some dexterity you can actually modify the holder to i) accept a standard bulb available from most anywhere, or ii) accept a white LED which will last somewhat longer than any of Volvo's bulbs seem to.
