Technically you are supposed to use distilled water, but I've been using tap water in all my cars for the last 30yrs. My Volvo battery is five years old and stil going strong. Having said that, when you look inside the cells, you will will notice vertical slots on either side that end just short of the top of the water reservoir. Where they end is the recommended level. Yes the water will expand, I would siphon off the access water....
