This topic come up often here and being a dealer tech in a northern state myself, I can tell you that it IS perfectly normal and I see the same thing in many FWD Volvos (plus other makes) every year during cold weather.
It's perfectly harmless too, no harm will ever occur if you do nothing like all our other customers who will still be driving these same cars for many more years w/o engine related problems.
A bad t-stat (opened too long, lower engine temp) and/or short trip driving in cold weather will add to the visable residue on the dipstick but don't be too concerned otherwise or let anyone convince you that you need major engine work.
