If I had the time (and the money), and wanted to get create a good RWD late model Volvo, I'd buy a '98 V90, replace the engine with a '94 B230FT, replace the transmission with the automatic that was in my '88 745T, put in the Motronic ECU, IPD cam and sway bar, strut tower brace, free-flow exhaust, lowered suspension, 17 or 18in three piece wheels (for looks!), reduce intercooler capacity by 33%. I'd have to upgrade the brakes to have the ability to stop this beast. This car will rock.
Off the line, the T5 will probably have the edge but it will be close. At the first shift point (or first turn, take your pick) the aforementioned car will own the road outright.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a top job at Enron so I have neither the time nor the money to play around like this. It would be fun, though.
The more adventurous (with deeper pockets) would probably try to mount an 8cyl non-Volvo engine. Didn't I read somewhere that some Ford 8cyls pretty much bolt onto the tranny? How about a chipped T6?
