With your '96 850, Volvos VST (scan tool) is required to check and reset the code. I don't know if a generic scan tool will work as I only use Volvos equipment myself but wherever you go, tell them what you did and maybe you'll luck out and they'll reset it for you at little or no cost? That depends on who you're talking to, their mood and sometimes it helps if you're a regular customer.
