Engine Light Codes 850

I have a 1996 850 with a check engine light on. I went to my local parts store that has a Actron OBD II code reader - they plugged it in, it powered up but it didn't get any codes. They tried several times but couldn't get anything. Is there a special way to do it? will the Actron code reader work? if not, which brand will? thanks
