I have seen many Volvos that have been rear-ended and at various speeds with various results. You can even watch a video of a crash test where a barrier weighing 2 tons smashes a NEW V70 at 35mph. There is some deformity but the tailgate does not even intrude in the rear part where the 3rd seat would be located.

The upcoming XC90 will have an even stronger rear end. No one can claim that that part of the car is the safest to sit in but Volvo would be the only car where I would have my kid sitting in such position.
