Have you had it checked at a Volvo dealer where they see these cars everyday? With '00 on up S80s, noises can be: sway bar links, ball joints, struts, upper strut bushings.......yes, quite a few things but I've not yet seen where a CV joint caused a knocking noise, highly unlikely.
S80 front suspension noises are nothing new to Volvo dealer techs these days so that's where I'd suggest you take it. Chances are good that it's still under warranty and the parts will be in stock.
