All your actions can be assessed using risk vs benefit.
I ride a Yamaha RD 400. I certainly try to watch out in all directions, but I do not feel particularly at risk when I ride. I do not try to ride in all the situations that I would take my Volvo.
From the news stories that I read, riding in the third seat of a Volvo wagon is safer than tooling around in your overloaded SUV with underinflated tires.
As a firefighter, I have seen quite a few fatals where the victim did not appear to be wearing their seat belt. I have never personally seen a fatal that was in their seatbelt.
EXCEPT - We did have a woman that was killed on Rte. 495, in her Volvo, wearing a seatbelt! She nicked a truck, spun, and went through a guardrail. The car was almost undamaged! Un fortunately a piece of guardrail went in one front door and out the other.
Go figure.
