thinking about buying S40-V40

I have a 2001 V40 with 20,000 km (about 12,500 miles) and have had no problems to dat, I just keep an eye on the breaks (no problem through the alloys you can see the pads just fine) mine seem to wearing evenly with the fronts so it may be the rumoured harder compound pads for the rear are actually working, or my car just doesn't want to wear them as fast. In anycase if she likes how the car drives (which is great it will put both your 850 and 740 to shame handling and ride wise I know from experience) the car is as good as your old ones (in fact any problems it has are probably going to be similar to the 850 and nothing major).
