I own both (95 855, 98 S70). It comes down to taste and what you
like. The 800 series is more "Volvo like" in the interior (so calssic
Volvo fans will prefer it). The S70 has a softer ride and interior
is more "modern". The 800s handle better (cause they have stiff
suspension) but our 855 seems to rattle a lot more.
The 70 series has larger wheel wells which help with some tire rubbing
issues if you like to stick on larger tires.
Drivetrain reliability is about the same.
The 70 series vary more year-to-year then the 800s. Over past couple
years the 70 series have had electronic throttle, 5 speed automatic
transmissions, side air bags with head protection, variable
valve timing, etc. all added as the models matured. The 800s did not change
as much, year-to-year. So, to a certain extent, you have to comapre
an 850 to a give year 70 series.
