Sounds like the air mass meter. $180 at fcp groton, they say list $237. The car will not run right without it, your symptoms sound the same as when the AMM failed on my 240. The good news is once you have the part it is easy to replace.

My Hayne's manual say a 241 code is "EGR system flow faulty". I can't find 231.

If you don't already have one you should get a Haynes 850 manual. Also, this is a great place to post questions before diving in. You'll get a lot of diagnostic help that will get you started the right direction.
