I remember someone posting a fix for this problem. He removed the faceplate and removed the little light bulbs and replaced them with some Radio Shack bulbs. I think they had to be soldered into place and they weren't as bright as the original bulbs.

Not worth the effort IMHO. You shouldn't be looking at the radio while you're driving anyways;)
