AC Evaporator 850 1996

The 850 has been known to have poorly designed evaporators that develop leaks. I had the evap. replaced back in '97 when my car was only 2 years old so it was under warranty - I was lucky to have a good service advisor at the time who looked out for me. It looks like I probably have another leaky evap. seeing that I only recharged the A/C last year at around this time and again, it is low.

The problem is that so much time has passed since that initial re-charge...they seemingly have every right to claim that the evap. only recently started acting up - although IMO, the evap. probably should have been replaced a long time ago, while under warranty. I think they pulled a fast one on you when they ONLY re-charged the A/C without checking for leaks on that initial visit. You could blame it on the dealer or you can blame it on Volvo (who probably doesn't like replacing every other 850's evaporator at their expense). My advice to you is to be polite about the matter and bring it to the attention of your dealer that this has been a recurring problem way back when the car was still under warranty. And let them know that YOU know that this is a common failure on 850s. If they don't feel like doing anything about it then go to another dealer and do the same. It might be a tough battle though, good luck with it.
