Automatic Shift Knob 850 1997

Are you guys sure? I'm pretty certain it is possible to remove the shift knob
without damaging anything. There is a holder inside the leather boot that
keeps the leather stationary. Twist it 90 degrees (i think) and lower the boot.
Then just pull up on the shift knob. The Haynes manual doesn't say anything about possible damage. Just wondering.
