Dashboard speakers aren't working 850 1994

How did the 3 1/2 " speaker fit into the dash? The tweeter is only 1". Wouldn't a larger speaker upset Volvo's attempt at a component system? BTW, my magnets have fallen off and I need to replace the tweeters.
