OK and thanks for that. And also to the other respondents for their input.

To recap - this lione should be in the same position as the throttle body but at the other end of the manifold? There is a circular depression in this position maybe 2 inches in diameter, the elbow presumably went to a hole in the centre. On my 94 turbo there is nothing there - no hole even.

I can discount this as a possibility for poor fuel consumption (uner 15 mpg - city).

Back to headscratching.....
