CD-R's not playing on some cd players is a common problem, not only limited to car cd players either.
One thing I have noticed, however, is that OLDER cd players don't seem to have problems with them. It's the newer cd players that tend to have difficulties, for many reasons.

I am not usually one to agree with dealer service managers, but in this case, he is right. The cd player does what it was designed to do, play cds. There is nothing in the docs or specs of that cd player that says it can play a cd-r.
Unfortunately, they ARE different.
Hopefully you will find the above site informative and you can find the right combination of media and burning technique that will work for you.
