External temperature gauge fluctuations 850 1994

I experienced exactly the same behavior just last week, when running my A/C the outside temperature gauge began to indicate very high temperatures (118 F). I then turned off the A/C and the temperature indicated slowly dropped back down, eventually to the low 80's. The A/C was not producing very cold air while this was occurring. The A/C has just been re-charged.
