In most cases only the body-shells of the cars were sold/given away.
TWR did pretty much all the development work for the BTCC cars. Volvo only supplied the cars then TWR stripped them and started working on them to build the BTCC racers.
Anyone who knows Tom Walkinshaw of TWR will know how he works and that he *never* selss or gives things away, so most of the technical bits (eg. engine, electronics, suspension, etc.) are actually owned by TWR and not Volvo, so they were stripped from the cars before they were returned to Volvo.
A lot of BTCC Volvo's you can find in some countries were actually 'spare' cars. Usually just the chassis with the rollcage and stuff installed, but without the engine and such. These were there to replace any crashed car during the races.
Bye, Arno.
