I don't know anything about the S80 except that it was nice to have them for for loanets. I did replace the glass mirror on my V70's mirror with the "European" (wide angle) glass about 4 years ago. I managed to dislodge one of the cams which is a snap-in plastic ball and socket arrangement at least on the SVC70. Took it apart again and snapped it right back in. It's been fine for the last 4 years and 80,000 miles. If the up-down motor works (you can hear the motor whirring when you use the switch) it might just be the cam.
If not, from the 850 manual, it looks like the motor is replacable. Don't know about the S80. What's the deductable on her insurance? BTW, I'd suggest trying to find an independent Volvo shop in her area, it's critical to both sanity and financial health once the Volvo warranty is gone. Also there are a number of Volvo parts discounters, like Nils Sefeldt and Verrigni Marine, and also Volvo parts recyclers like Erie Volvo. See the pull-down menus above.
