Had that problem too, several years ago. There is a celenoid that controls a single black "button" that acts as the lock. It's probably frozen in the lock position, so when you shut the fuel cover it won't close all the way.

The "fix" is in the trunk. You have to pull the trunk liner (pretty easy) and you'll see the celenoid, in the right rear fender well. You just have clean it up and maybe a little vasoline or WD-40 and you shouldn't have the problem anymore.
