I've always used Mobil 1 10W30 on my Volvo T5 at 98,000 miles. It uses no oil.
I consider the car "just about broken in".
I used Castrol GTX 10W30 on SAAB #1 that made it to just under 300,000 miles. (Ahhhh, those "classic" iron engine blocks!)
When I bought used cars I found myself resorting to heavier and heavier weight oil, until I'd finally give up and trade it. Usually by the time I was buying 50 weight Castrol by the case, it was time to sell.
If you have trouble with excessive oil consumption because the PO (previous owner) leased and thought oil changes were a highly overrated option, there is a 15W50 Mobil 1 synthetic http://www.exxonmobil.com/netcom/mall/ (I've joked "Formulated specially for Volvo 960s"). I'd try it before resorting to (or until resorting to) a rebuilt or salvage motor.
Before resorting to 15W50 there are a number of places that the engine can leak oil from that are worth exploring such as the turbo oil return line O ring.
