To reset the codes...you're on the right path. You have to be sure you've viewed all of the codes in the socket (say, for example A2)...you have to see a code repeat to know you've read them all. Now, use the same method you're using hold down, release, wait for the light...hold down again...but instead of doing it for 5 seconds...try 6 or 7, I've always had to hold it down for at least 7 on mine.....I don;t know why, but it seems pretty picky. Then again, I have a 95, so I doubt it...but maybe it's different?
