Have just been there and done something similar to that.
The door , by your description ,sounds like the recirculation control flap.
I just replaced the motor that drives it yesterday .Access is achieved through the removal of the glove box .
If the rear plastic connector is broken then I think the job is a little more complicated and requires the removal of the dash.I trust someone with more knowledge might give you a definite answer to that however.
