pulling an 850 with a tow dolly? 850

I pulled my 854 from Dallas to Montgomery, Alabama on a tow dolly. it worked fine, but I would have preferred a trailer. A good tandem axle trailer will pull better and is much easier to maneuver, since backing up is not so good with a dolly.
I left the tranny in neutral, thinking all of that rocking back and forth would not be that good for it. You may want more opinions on this.
