If you want to stay RWD (or want utter reliability), I'd look for a 940 turbo (last year 94? 95?) - more dependable, and the turbos have stronger suspension and brakes than N/A engines. My 94 gave me zero problems...simply replaced tires and muffler. The B230FT engine is a lean, clean drivin' machine.
The FWD 850 has more amenities, more power, higher initial build quality, great sound system (for stock)...but it's a far more complex beast. The 1995 year is the third year of US production. A few things will break. The Porsche-designed 5cyl motor is an intriguing and very successful piece of engineering...but there's a lot going more on under the hood of an 850. Ride will be stiffer in the 850 than 900 (the ride softens up in 98 when it was renamed S/V/C70), but the FWD implementation is very good - far beyond my skeptical expectations. I'm almost convinced it works. Can't do donuts or drift turns in the snow with FWD, though.
