Yeah, I too, had to rebuild my 745T's turbo...twice (a lot of miles). Did it the second time for $96! My 945T, on the other hand, had a trouble-free turbo, thanks at least in part to a flow restrictor that I decided to leave in place.
The new turbos are much more durable, and failure is very rare. My indy tech is seeing 850s with 300K on them and he has yet to repair a turbo in one of them. The new breed is defended by ECU control and I assume better oil and water supply. If you use synthetic, you add that much more protection.
Short story: Don't worry about the turbo in a 70-class Volvo. You'll love the performance, though you'll occasionally yearn for RWD.
