They usually cause a slight rattle over smaller bumps or can be heard knocking if turning the wheel side to side. You can also try grabbing them and see if you can feel any freeplay when pushed/pulled away from their 2 mounts or use a prybar to do that.
The price on those decreased a few months ago and our dealer now sells them for $42 each. They were almost double that 6 months ago. If they want $149 installed, that's about right.
You could probably do that yourself as it's not too difficult.
