Yes, I was spooked by the stories here, bought the Volvo VIP warranty and it was definitely a loser! (By the tune of about $800, and that's including the work that the dealer did that probably wasn't needed, and the two rather pricey failures that occurred around 99,000 miles.) If my original warranty were about to expire (and I had a crystal ball), I'd take it to an indy ship or even the Volvo dealer for a "pre-purchase" inspection and have them go over everything with a fine-tooth comb. Then take the extended warranty money and put it in the bank. I'm sure I subsidized a number of XC bevel gear failures.
