Heating/cooling system has gone berserk 850

When your temp goes into the red, unless you see smoke it's best to roll down the windows and turn the heat all on high, helps to vent the engine temp and allows for the coolant system to keep working.

I agree that it sounds like your belts are slipping. Water pump, AC, hard starting, etc.
