AC on 850's 850 1997

I have noticed that I do not hear the AC compressor cycling off and on. The 240 had a clicking sound. Does the 850's copmpressor just stay on all the time with AC on? & then add warm air when temp is cool enough, or is it broke? By the way, this is standard climate control, not computerized.
