I'm thinking the same way. I wanted more power and traction. The T5 solves the power part and I think I'll just add a set of winter tires for the traction part. I too don't like the possible AWD issues, i.e. extra weight, poor mileage, horse power drain and most importantly serious maintenance issues.
The Audi A6 Avant is a hell of a car to test drive but I keep reading about serious Audi relaibility problems especially from current owners.
