Hmm.. Really hot sounds like it's either running very lean or your camshaft timing is out.

Have you checked the output from the oxygen sensor when it's running?

Any codes in the ECU? You can check with the little black box mounted on the shock-tower near the air-filter. Open the lid, remove short 'pigtail' wire and plug from cap, connect plug into hole labeled '2', turn on ignition, press button on black box once for 0.5 to 1 sec.

Note the number of 'blinks' by the LED. It will give a code like "blink-blink-long pause-blink-long pause-blink-blink-blink", which is '2.1.3'.

Press button again until it repeats the previous code (end of codes reached).

A code of '1.1.1' means 'all OK, no errors', any other code means that an error has been detected.

When is the last time the cam-belt has been changed? Cculd it have jumped a tooth? Grab a Haynes manual and check if all the timing marks on the crank pulley and cam wheel line up.

Just as a precaution also pull your injectors (if it's a multi-point) and check if they spray properly and don't leak. Also check/replace the o-rings to rule out any vacuum leaks.
